THE ROAD THROUGH THE OAKS
Imagine coming home along a winding road where live oaks meet overhead and the city seems to slip away. Highland Road follows the first high ground along the Mississippi north of the Gulf, and for more than 200 years it has connected the homes of an area once known as the Dutch Highlands.
Louisiana designated Highland Road a historic road and scenic parkway in 1989, and the corridor still keeps its pastoral, residential feel. Homes range from historic properties to estates on large, wooded lots.
A Living History
Settlement here dates to 1785, under Spanish rule, and some of the area's earliest homes were built with cypress half-timbers and bousillage, a traditional fill of mud and moss. The area's southern edge is bounded by Bayou Fountain.
Today the LSU Hilltop Arboretum, at 11855 Highland Road, protects 14 acres of native landscape with more than 150 native species, a quiet place for a morning walk.
Tennis by Day, Stars by Night
BREC's Highland Road Community Park offers a tennis center, pickleball, a walking loop, a splash pad, and disc golf, all just off the parkway.
In the same park, the Highland Road Park Observatory opened in 1997 as a partnership of BREC, LSU, and the Baton Rouge Astronomical Society. Its 20-inch telescope has helped discover more than 50 asteroids.
